A football enthusiast who will be able today to say he is genuinely happy whichever side wins the third Rugby test is Herbert. (“Buck”) Taylor, of the Sydenham Rugby Football Club. A New Zealander by upbringing, he was born in the Transvaal at a little place near Pretoria known as Robert’s Heights. His father, who served with the Royal Horse in German East Africa, lost an eye as a soldier and came to New Zealand as a fitter and turner from England. “Buck” took a long time to forget his days on the veld. When he saw a Fijian woman entering a house at Addington soon after he arrived in this country, he rushed home to announce to his mother: “There are no kraals here.” As a footballer, he is a New Zealander. He played senior reserve and an occasional senior match as a forward for Sydenham before he went overseas with the Second N.Z.E.F., in the A.S.C. His playing days over at the end of the war. he turned to coaching for Sydenham and teams under his charge have been 6st 71b, 7st 71b and Bst 101 b. the last-named winning a seven-a-side tournament. George Hill was a fellow coach. Buck Taylor is prominent, too, in the social activities of the Sydenham club. being unfailingly cheerful, especially when playing a harmonica.
