ALCOHOLISM
Sir,—When the Minister of Justice and his associates are so gravely concerned about this subject, it is time we all were. Inconsistent as it may seem, about the same day, those in authority were considering granting more licences to grocers to sell spirits, and granting charters to more clubs to encourage drinking. Drinking in hotels in evenings and on Sundays just seems to be taken for granted. Is it any wonder the young folk just ignore other laws also? Our courts prove they do. Now we are told our children are supposed to be taught temperance in our schools. It is good to hear that, but could it not be one of our chief school subjects so that they might really know thoroughly just what alcohol does for the brain, nervous system, body, and character, and have them fortified against this degrading habit? —Yours, etc., OXFORD OBSERVER. August 16, 1956.
