NEW MARKET IN EUROPE
ATTITUDE TAKEN BY BRITAIN (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, August 13. Important decisions on Britain’s relationship with the Commonwealth on the one hand and with Europe on the other can be expected next month, says the “Scotsman,” quoting an authoritative source in Whitehall This decision would be made by the Cabinet on the basis of studies made by a joint committee of the Board oi Trade and the Treasury on the altitude Britain should take toward the common market which Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg intend to form. The committee has decided that Britain cannot afford to stand outsiae such a market, for the simple reason that it will include Germany, whose membership could make it a strong economic rival to Britain; nor can Britain afford to relax her strong trade ties with the Commonwealth, particularly Australia. The solution the committee is working for is to link the common market with the Commonwealth by means of the sterling area’s trade and financial machinery.
