CONFERENCE ON SUEZ
India May Speak For Egypt (N.Z. Press Association—Copyngnt) (Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 14. India is expected to play a key, if not the key role, at the conference on the Suez Canal opening in London this week, Reuter s diplomatic correspondent said today. ~ d j. p, ? ma * ic informants, he said that, as a result of the decision of tne Egyptian President, Colonel Nasser, not to send a representative, India s representative would inevitably tend to be regarded as a spokesman for Egypt, whether or not he was formally given the title. “It has been noted that the Indian representative, Mr Khrisna Menon, is conferring with President Nasser on his wav to London and also that it was the Indian Prime Minister, Mr Nehru who announced Egypt s inability to participate in the conference several days before President Nasser announced it himself,” the correspondent said. “India is also expected to assume a position of leadership in relation to some of the other Asian countries sending delegates, such as -Ceylon and Indonesia, whose apnroach to the Suez • question is known io be similar to that of India in the search for a peaceful solution safeguarding both the international use of the canal and the sovereignty and dignity of Egypt.
