SMUGGLING OF COMICS

ILLICIT ENTRY TO AUSTRALIA (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE. August 14. Micro-films of American horror comics are being smuggled into Australia for reproduction. Dr. E. R. Wyeth, senior lecturer in education at Melbourne University, told the Melbourne Constitutional Club yesterday. The comics were revolting, ugly and cheap, with undue emphasis on violence. sex and horror, he said. “The Customs are doing their best to stop this smuggling, but the film is getting through,” said Dr. Wyeth. “A hundred may get through before one is discovered. And when that one is discovered and banned it comes back a few weeks later under a different name.” A senior Customs official said last night: “We are sure micro-films are coming into the country and are being reproduced. “But once the film is printed it is out of our hands.”
