FARMERS’ POTENTIAL IN N.Z. ECONOMY
VIEWS OF Mk J. J. MAHER (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 19. “The powers that be should take heed of the advice so constantly given to them by the federation’s loaders that if farming received a ‘fair go’ it can do a great deal for New Zealand.” said Mr J. J. Maher, M.P., Dominion treasurer of Federated Farmers, in his report to the annual conference. ‘ “I would like to see the powers that be realise that there are more ways than one of increasing the national income,” he said. For example, farmers costs could be decreased—particularly shipping and transport costs. Ships could be turned round much faster and the interest and standing charges bill they incurred while waiting at wharves would be cut down. Local bodies could also help by seeing that there was no waste of money and no “Empire building” in their organisations, he said.
