Mr S. T. Barnett, Controller-General of Police, left Christchurch yesterday morning by air for Invercargill where he will investigate problems of overcrowding at the Borstal institution. He attended the Christchurch police ball on Thursday evening, and yesterday, before his departure, conferred with Superintendent D. Sugrue. Mr A. N. Stone, a Christchurch public accountant, has been appointed a member of the Assessment Court for the City of Christchurch under the Urban Farm Land Rating Act. 1932. Mr Stone succeeds Mr C. A. Campion, who has resigned from membership of the Court.

Mr Michael Stephens, a member of the home service talks staff of the British Broadcasting Corporation, is making a Commonwealth tour sponsored by the Imperial Relations Trust. He will visit each of the seven sovereign Commonwealth countries during his tour. Yesterday Mr Stephens visited Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. He will travel to Dunedin tomorrow and will later spend three weeks in the North Island. Mr Douglas Laurie, formerly of Western Australia, has been appointed South Island regional manager of Wells Organisations, Ltd., a firm founded in America which specialises in raising funds for churches.
