RENTS OF STATE FLATS

INCREASES AFTER RELETTING EXISTING TENANCIES NOT AFFECTED (New Zealana Press A tsociation) WELLINGTON, July 13. Rentals for State flats will be increased when the flats arc relet, to put the tenancies on a more economic basis. Existing tenancies would not be affected by the change, said the Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan), when announcing the new charges. Rentals for the 12 larger blocks of State flats in Auckland and Wellington were exempted from the 1950 decision to increase rentals of State houses’when units were relet, said Mr Sullivan. Rents from the flats were quite inadequate, and costs far exceeded the rents received. Increases for the large Dixon street and Terrace flats in Wellington ranged from 17s 6d to £1 12s 6d a week, said the Minister. Those for the Greys avenue flats in Auckland would range from £1 to £2 Is 6d a week.

In the smaller blocks, the adjustments would be the same as those applying to State rental houses, said Mr Sullivan
