CREW TO WORK BABINDA
AUSTRALIAN TRIP FOR HARDWOOD EMPLOYMENT UNDER N.Z. AWARD (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 13. The crew of the freighter Babinda were still unhappy with conditions in the ship, but had consented to work another trip for a load of hardwood from Australia, said the president of the New Zealand Seamen’s Union (Mr F. P. Walsh) in Wellington tonight. Crew members, who had come from Fiji, were now receiving New Zealand rates of pay, and were working under New Zealand award conditions on overtime, Mr Walsh said. They wanted to 'ieave the ship, but at the union’s request they had agreed to make one more trip “to see if things can be patched up.” 1 The men wanted to see New Zealand union officials on their return -to Whangarei, said Mr Walsh. Their feeling was that they would like to be paid off and return to Fiji.
“These men are not members of the New Zealand union, but the expenses of this dispute have been bprne by the union.” Mr Walsh said. “It is sometimes necessary to take action like this to make sure that outside companies cannot undercut tfre freight rates charged by companies which comply with New Zealand award conditions.” r
