CORONER ISSUES WARNING TO SPORTSMEN (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 12. A warning was issued today by the Coroner (Mr A. D. Copeland) at Otahuhu against using antiquated guns with modern high velocity cartridges for which the guns were never designed. The Coroner was closing the inquest on Arthur Edwin Vaile, aged 78, who was found dead on the roadside at Manurewa on May 8, with his shotgun in pieces beside him. Mr Copeland said the fatality occurred as a result of a using a defective firearm of ancient manufacture, not suitable for modern ammunition. It had a badly defective mechanism, and should have been discarded long ago He had no doubt that firearms of a similar nature w r ere being used by sportsmen. They were not only a potential danger to the public, but also the users. Mr Copeland found that deceased died of shock and hemorrhase due to multiple injuries caused by the accidental discharge of a shotgun.
