A talk on roses and their culture, illustrated by slides, was given by Mr R. G. Heasley at the monthly meeting of the Shirley branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs H. C. Pruden presided. A competition for a winter floral decoration was won by Mrs Griffiths.

Paul Blanche has put glamour into rainwear in his autumn collection shown in London recently. Highlight of the show was a glorified trench coat in oyster cotton satin with giltedged pearl buttons and a heavy satin lining. Another new trend was the introduction of short raincoats—usually thigh-length—which are extremely smart, but the question must be asked whether smartness makes up for the fact that the legs would have to bear the whole brunt of a rainstorm.
