ROADS BLOCKED IN N.S.W.

FLOODS, SNOW, AND MUD

(Rec. 10 p.m.) MELBOURNE. July 12. Every road from Melbourne to Sydney was blocked today by floods, snow, or mud. Even detour roads through Adelaide and Broken Hill, involving hundreds of extra miles for motor traffic, were impassable. Flood waters from the Darling river cut them. Heavy snowfalls today cut the last road link between Melbourne and Sydney—the route which passes through Cooma and Canberra. Cargoes worth more than £1,000.000 are stranded on the highways. Deep mud pools, some as deep as two feet, have delayed 200 heavy transports. Transport drivers are sleeping in the cabins of their trucks, which remain jammed bonnet to tray along the highways. Police and ambulance services are providing drivers with food and drink.

Bulldozers were in use at one badlyjammed part ’of the road, where 130 trucks are standing, but both available bulldozers broke down today.
