ATTITUDE OF TURKEY

Firm Objection To Enosis LONDON, July 12. Turkey has expressed its opposition to self-determination for Cyprus in the strongest possible terms and Britain has dropped from her plans for Cyprus any suggestion that selfdetermination might be achieved within, say. 10 years, mainly because of the Turkish opposition, says the “Yorkshire Post.”

“The Turks, it is now understood, made it clear that a possible consequence of any plan leading to enosis (the union of Cyprus with Greece) would be the severance by Turkey of her alliance with the West.

“This would mean withdrawal from NATO.

“Self-determination in Turkish eyes means enosis.

“The Commonwealth Prime Ministers were all greatly impressed by the vigour of Turkey’s opposition to changing the status quo in Cyprus.

“Even Mr Nehru now feels that the Cyprus problem is more complex than he was inclined to think originally. “Before coming to London he stopped at Athens and was reported to be not unsympathetic to the Greek case.

“Now, it is being said that he may use his good offices in an endeavour to persuade Greece to drop her intention to raise the Cyprus question at the autumn meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.”
