AMALGAMATION OF COUNTIES
COMMISSION TO MEET AT PAPARUA
The Paparua County Council has agreed to be represented at a meeting of the Halswell' Springs and Paparua County Councils with the Local Government Commission, at Paparua, on July 17. . “Our rural ratepayers can expect the formation of a borough in Paparua,” said Cr R. C. Gilberthorpe. “This will, of course, leave the rest of the county in an unenviable position.” The area which would be included within the boundaries of a borough would be most of Hornby and Sockburn, part of Templeton, and possibly part of Islington.
Cr. J. A. Weaver: It would seem to be an opportune time. At its June meeting the council agreed that the Halswell County Council “be asked for a definite decision on amalgamation.” In reply the Halswell council advised that on April 18 a meeting of that council approved a that an approach be made to the Paparua council “with a view to amalgamation.” But on. May 3 a meeting of ratepayers favoured an amalgamation of the Halswell. Springs and Paparua counties. “This resolution, as you will see, conflicted with the resolution of the council, and it would now appear that my council is unable at the moment to take any further steps,” wrote the Halswell county clerk (Mrs R. Ballintyne). The letter was received.
