SEAWEEDS FROM KERMADECS

LARGE COLLECTION MADE (New Zealana Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 8 Pressed and picked specimens of rare and unusual algae gathered from the sea off Raoul Island, in the Kermadec Islands, were among the large collection of botanical specimens brought back to New Zealand in the naval vessel Tui by Mr P. Bergquist, a student at Auckland University College. Mr Bergquist, who is a skilled underwater skin diver, is the first scientist to make a thorough undersea botanical investigation in the Kermadecs. The specimens of seaweed he has brought back more than double the number previously collected in the islands. Few of the specimens are found in New Zealand waters. Whether a seaweed containing agar, a valuable property used in medicines, is among the specimens, Mr Bergquist is not certain, but he believes he may have two specimens which will yield this property. If it is present he fears it might be impracticable to gather the algae commercially because of the heavy surf in the Kermadecs.
