OLYMPIC TRIALS

HOCKEY

PRELIMINARY GAME IN CHRISTCHURCH VISIT BY PAKISTAN TEAM PROPOSED After the New’ Zealand Shield hockey tournament, which will conclude in Christchurch on Friday morning. August 3, a trial match to assist in the choice of a New Zealand team for the Olympic Games will be held on the Saturday afternoon. This was decided by the management of the New Zealand Hockey Association at its meeting last evening. The main trials will start at MasteYton on Tuesday, August 21. It is likely that a New Zealand v. The Rest match will be played there on August 23. Canterbury and Wellington stated in letters that they were prepared to assist in the preparation of the team chosen for the Olympic Games by playing matches against it. Wellington suggested also that a short camp be held immediately after the trials at Masterton. He was not in favour of the camp immediately after the trials, said the convener of the selectors (Mr E. McLeod). There would be a training camp before the team went to the Olympics, and further leave for the players would be difficult and present financial problems. He suggested week-end training schools instead. It. was decided to advise Wellington and Canterbury that their suggestions would be given further considerThe Afghan Sports Club was keen to send a hockey team to New Zealand in 1957. stated the club in a letter. The offer arose from private inquiries made by Mahmood Hussain, secretary of the Pakistan Cricket Board of Control. The club is the leading team in Pakistan. It won the Bombay Gold Cup tournament, and at Lucknow it beat a Punjab team containing eight Olympic players. The matter will be discussed further by representatives at the Olympic Games. Tour by N.S.W. Team Advice was received from New South Wales that it fiad accepted the itinerary for its tour of plew Zealand. Nominations for the team were to close yesterday, and it was expected the team would be announced shortly. Twenty-four applications by provincial associations had been made for the 16 matches allowed for in the New South Wales tour, said the secretary (Mr W. H. Down). The chairman (Mr J. G. Leggat) and Mr Down were appointed to finalise details of the itinerary. Sightseeing trips to Mount Cook, Waitomo Caves, and Rotorua will be made by the team if the itinerary permits. Messrs Leggat, Down, W. J. Bowden, and L. 11. Norton were appointed liaison officers for the tour. A conference with New South Wales officials to discuss interpretations of the rules was not necessary, the meeting decided when a request from the New Zealand Umpires’ Association for this was considered. “We shall be having informal discussions throughout the tour," said Mr Down. In the meantime, he did not think it necessary to hold the meeting. If it were found that there were any major differences then a meeting would be arranged. A special meeting of delegates will be held in Christchurch on August 1, during the New Zealand Shield tournament to consider the formation of a new provincial association to be known as EasternNorthern. The proposed association is at present a sub-association of Southland.
