RACE BETTING

Sir, —Mr A. L. Matson must surely have been speaking with his tongue in his cheek when he declared that the decline in on-course betting had nothing to do with the T.A.B. If the cause is economic, how does he explain the fact that off-course betting is steadily increasing? The truth of the matter is that, apart from being a social evil, the T.A.B. has not proved the bonanza that its sponsors prophesied (and are still declaring* it to be) for racing clubs. Attendances are falling awav at race meetings and increasing at TA.B. agencies. From every pound invested on the racecourse the clubs get 7$ per cent.; but all they get from the T.A.B. is what is left of the 7| per cent, after the huge expenses Of running the organisation are met.—Yours, etc., ONLOOKER. July 5. 1956. [Mr Matson said that he Fad no comments to make on this letter.]
