ADDINGTON MARKET

CATTLE VALUES FIRMER

Fat Lambs And Sheep Weaker MOST STORE SHEEP EASIER Cattle values showed further useful improvement at Addington yesterday. This was in the face of a yarding of modest proportions. There was a heavy yarding of fat lambs with some decline in values. This was emphasised by the absence of buyers for export. Fat sheep numbers were up by about 1000 and ewes, mainly, had to sustain the brunt of the decline in values. All classes of store shoep. except two-tooth ewes, were easier, although the yarding was a small one.

Good quality fat pigs, as has been generally the ease this year, met a buoyant market.

STORE SHEEP The store sheep market was less buoyant than it has been for some weeks. The sharp cold snap experienced during the week, with snow down to fairly low levels, may have done something to detract from the confidence which has lately been built up as pastures have continued to grow under remarkably mild conditions for mid-winter. With the exception of two-tooth ewes, most classes of store sheep were cheaper.

The offering totalled 3740 head, compared with 5882 last week. It was one of the smallest offerings of the season, and its quality could be described as only average. In the selection were 2152 lambs, most of which were wether lambs. 271 two-tooth ewes, 1067 older ewes, and 250 wethers.

There was an all-round decline In values for lambs, which were* of mixed quality, with a small representation of good, forward quality sorts. For the best

the drop in price was small—no more than 2s a head —but for secondary quality the depreciation was about 4s. The best of the wether lambs made from 52s 6d to 625, average to good 45s to 51s. and light and inferior 29s to 35s 6d. The tops of the small selection of ewe lambs realised from 56s to 60s, with others ranging from 38s 6d to 475. Top price of the sale—62s—was paid for 78 Romney cross wether lambs from D. Sloss (Cheviot), who sent forward 200 Romneys and Corriedales, which realised from 52s 6d upwards. Sales of lambs were made as follows: H. Matson and Company sold: on account of J. B. and C. R. Bayley (Springbank), 120 shorn Romney wether lambs at 555.

New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., sold: on account of D. Sloss (Cheviot), 200 wether lambs at 52s 6d to 625.

M. Macready (Rakaia Gorge), 53 wether lambs at 50s; south client, 117 wether lambs at 47s 6d; L. J. Oliver (Te Pirita), 52 wether lambs at 50s 6d. Pyne. Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of A. R. Bussell (Upper Riccarton), 20 wether lambs at 48s; D. J. Parsonson (Hawarden), 86 ewe lambs at 38s 6d and 40 wether lambs at 41s 6d; A. D. Fox and Son (Scargill). 71 wether lambs at 48s 6d; Timaru client, 131 wether lambs at 49s 6d; J. Kennedy (Glentunnel), 84 wether lambs at 39s to 40s; W. E. Drake (Cheviot), 26 wether lambs at 46s 6d; L. L. Barnes (Spotswood), 40 wether lambs at 46s 6d; H. and R. P. Mackie (Kaikoura), 12 wether lambs at 45s 6d; Miss M. Witbrock (Russley road), 10 wether lambs at 455; C. Waters (Sumner), 12 lambs at 38s.

National Mortgage and Agency sold: on account of E. P. King (Waipara), 104 ewe lambs at 425.

The two-tooth ewe entry was small in size, but it included an outstanding line of 142 Corriedales in lamb to Border Leicester-Southdown rams put out on March 25. The top pen of 78 sheep from J G - Hassan (Springbank) fetched £5 2s 6d. The second pen of smaller sheep realised 86s. At these rates the best of the offering were slightly dearer than at the last sale.

Sales were made as under:— H. Matson and Company sold: on account of J. G. Hassan (Springbank), 142 Corriedales at 86s to £5 2s 6d. Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd. sold: on account of Ashburton client, 63 ewes at 565; Darfield client, 70 ewes at 575. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., sold: on account of J Quinn (Ashburton), 300 ewes at 36s to 475.

Older ewes also met a less animated sale and in some cases sales proved difficult to make. The best were barely able to maintain late rates, while indifferent old ewes were cheaper by 3s to 4s a head. Top price of the old ewe section was 64s paid for the top pen of 70 four-vear-old Cornedale ewes in lamb to Southdown rams from Beddis and Brown (Parnassus). The best of the selection sold at from 55s to 645, with average at 40s to 47s and others at 30s to 395. Sales included:—

Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd. sold: on acBeddis and Brown (Parnassus), 106 four-year ewes at 55s to 645; L. L. Barnes (Kaikoura), 24 ewes at 30s 6d; D. (Springston), 113 aged Cornedale ewes at 61s 6d. National Mortgage and Agency sold: on account of T. A.’ Richards (Methven), 26 purebred Southdown ewes in lamb to il ams at 7gns to 12 *ns (these sheep had been registered, but registration had been allowed to lapse). ~™a rce’ iv stable lines of wethers were included.

x FAT LAMBS Fat lamb yardings totalled 1146, which doubl6 last week’s tally of „ Quallt y was mixed. FAT SHEEP Last week’s exceptionally keen demand for prime quality ewes was not sustained in the fat sheep section. Perhaps it had something to do with the increased numbers yarded. The total was 5103, compared with 4041 last week. Ewe prices generally suffered a reverse, prices dropping by 5s to 6s a head, especially for the lighter sheep. Wethers also, at times, met with a dragging sale, and competition was limited, except for the odd pens of extra good quality sheep. Over all, values might fairly be described as being 2s to 3s a head down on those of last week. There were a number of passings.

wethers sold up to 92s Id, which was the price paid to R. Marshall (Springbank), for his tops of a small line of eight, which sold from 73s Id to 92s Id. Another quotable sale was made by A. W. Taylor (Methven), whose line of 50 made from 89s Id to 90s ld—4o at the lower price and 10 at the top figure. Winter Bros. (West Eyreton) disposed of 10 wethers at 90s Id. W. R. Oliver (Hororata) led the ew6 market with a sale of 15 at 59s Id, and Winter Bros, sold 45 at 58s Id, and Waimairi Farm (Horrelville) quitted 15 at the same figure, their line of 64 averaging 57s Id. These however were exceptional sales, and thus, perhaps, did not provide a true picture of the market. Values were:— prime young wethers, 83s to 92s Prime medium wethers, 71s Id to 78s Id. Prime light wethers, 58s Id to 66s Id. Extra prime ewes, 46s ld to 54s Id (with some exceptionally good sorts realising 57s ld to 59s ld).
