LABORATORY’S WORK

VISITS BY GROUPS FROM LOCAL BODIES Groups from various Government and local body departments have visited the Dominion Laboratory in Christchurch recently, where demonstrations of the laboratory’s work in many branches of industry have been held. The visits are a result of great interest which was created last November when the Dominion Laboratory in Wellington was opened to the public. “Unfortunately, we have not the staff here in Christchurch to allow the general public to see our work, but we may find it possible to extend invitations to pupils of secondary schools in the city.” said the Government Analyst (Mr N. P. Alcorn) yesterday.

The visitors to the laboratory yesterday were officers of departments of the Christchurch City Council, the Drainage Board, and the Health Department. They saw investigations being carried out on air pollution in Christchurch, and the pollution of the Heathcote, Avon, and Waimakariri rivers.

Last Thursday, a group of pharmacy students were shown around the laboratory, and in the afternoon detectives of the Criminal Investigation Branch learnt about toxicology (the study of poisons) and the use of ultra-violet lamps.
