Transport Of Piano Along Milford Track Was An Arduous Task
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON. July 2. A piano manhandled eight miles »long the Milford track to the Quintin Huts may be an added inducement to the 2000 persons who will tramp along the track this season. Presented to the huts by Mr William Anderson, who was formerly in charge at Quinta, the piano was ferried across the upper arm of the sound from Milford to the start of the track, and again ferried across Lake Ada.
Then it was pushed along eight miles of track on two light sections of rail designed by Mr Anderson. This latter task kept Mr Anderson and ’his helpers busy for four and a half da>s. The last two miles were the worst and 12 persons helped. Describing the piano's journey this morning, the Minister in charge of Tourist and Health Resorts (Mr D. J. Eyre) said his department this year was increasing the number of guided parties to Milford from 53 to 63. The maximum for each party was also being increased from 30 to 36. The first ordinary trip leaves Te Anau on November 28 and parties
will then leave every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until March 29. 1957.
Ten special trips would be made between December 22 and January 26. said Mr Eyre. At the height of the season, about. 180 people would set out every week on the three day walk to Milford. It was at the Quentin Huts that the parties spent the third night of their trip.
