N.Z. POLO TEAM BEATEN

MATCH AT COWDRAY PARK (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON. July 1. The New Zealand Aotea polo team was beaten comfortably by the Cowdray Park team. The New Zealanders had a total handicap of 18. compared with Cowdray Parks 20, and were allowed one and a half goals. Cowdray Park scored 11 goals, eight of them in the first half, and at the end of the final of five chukkers, A. Kay scored for Aotea, making the result 11 to 21. The game was played in a heavy shower, which made the turf very slippery. It was the New Zealanders’ first game at Cowdray Park and their second since they arrived. They were no match for the local side, which is regarded as one of the best in the country. They used Argentinean ponies, which were much better trained and faster than those owned by the New Zealanders.

Judging by today’s play, the New Zealanders’ handicap appeared to be nearer 12 than 18. which means that they would have been allowed some seven goals.

Before the game, the New Zealanders and their wives were entertained to lunch by Lord Cowdray. He wished them an enjoyable season and said they had made “a very sporting effort’’ in travelling all the way to England.
