FENCING

OLYMPIC TRIAL TEAM THREE CANTERBURY NOMINEES The Canterbury Provincial Fencing Council has nominated three of its training squad of six to attend the national Olympic trials in Wellington on September 1 and 2. The three are Mesdames E. McElwee and O. Jekyll and P. Temple. Because of the new standards set for inclusion in the team and in view of the council’s recent decision to support the standards set the other three members of the squad have not been included. No reply had yet been received to the council’s request to the New Zealand Association for an extension of the time allowed for raising the £lOO required to send a fencing team to the Olympic Games, said the president of the council (Mr N. M. West) yesterday. The money was to have been raised by July 1. but only £25 of the £lOO had been raised, said Mr West. The money was contributed by fencers and their supporters and no approach had been made to the public.
