NINTH SUCCESSIVE MATCH
A. VAN DER MERWE (New Zealand Press Association) , NELSON, July 2. The day of the first test at Dunedin on Saturday week should be memorable for the Springbok hooker, Albertus van der Merwe. On that day he should play his sixth test, and it will be his twenty-seventh birthday. Van der Merwe, who will play his ninth successive match of the tour on Wednesday—one of them was the last match in Australia —played in the last three tests against the British Lions last year and hooked in both tests in Australia.
Other players to have birthdays during the remainder of the tour are A. I. Kirkpatrick (July 25), M. Hanekom (July 27) and B. F. Howe (August 30). The big front-row forward, H. N. Walker, the only Springbok son of a Springbok father, had his twentyeighth birthday at Napier on Sunday Others to have had birthdays since the team arrived in New Zealand have been P. E. Montini (June 15). W. Rosenberg (June 18). D. F. Retief (June 28), and P. G. Johnstone (June 30). The ass : stant manager (Mr D. de Villiers), T A. Gentles, and D. S. P Ackermann all had birthdays during the Australian section of the tour.
