BRITISH WOMEN’S OPEN TITLE

WIN FOR 19 YEAR OLD AMERICAN (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 29. Miss Margaret (Wiffi) Smith, the 19-year-old American golfer and a member of the Curtis Cup team won the British women’s open golf championship at Sunningdale, Berkshire, today. She beat her countrywoman, Miss Mary Patton Janssen, by 8 and 7 in the 36 hole final. In this the first all-American final In the 63 years of the championship, Miss Smith dominated the match. It was the biggest marginal victory since 1926.

ASHBURTON AND RUSSLEY DRAW

The Ashburton Golf Club held the Russley Golf Club to a draw in a match played at Ashburton yesterday. Russley vvon the foursomes and Ashburton the singles, each team winning 15 games. Singles (Ashburton names first).—Murdoch lost to Arundel, Heenan beat Armstrong, Harper halved with Atkinson, Macer beat Halstead, Browne beat C. G. Pcn’ington. Donaldson beat R. G. Penlington. Allen lost to Sinclair, Cookson beat Marshall, Brophy beat Aldersley. Letford beat Watson, Byrne lost to Carter. Caithness beat Corbett, Porter lost to Sweet, Irving lost to Dyhrberg, MacGregor beat Forster, Fechney lost to Harris, Wall lost to Christie, Woodham lost to Broadhurst, Robilliard lost to Smith Brand beat Bryant.

S. G. JONES AVINS ANNUAL TAURANGA EVENT

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 1. Finishing with a brilliant round of 66, S. G. Jones, the national amateur golf champion, won the fourth annual Tauranga invitation golf tournament during the week-end.

With rounds of 70, 73, and 66, Jones finished 12 strokes ahead of I. A. Wylds, of Whakatane, the second amateur.

TARANAKI WOMEN’S TEAM
