PARKING METER PATROL
MOTOR CYCLES TO BE USED Two light motor-cycles, to be used by traffic officers to check parking meters, will be bought by the Christchurch City Council on the recommendation of the council’s Traffic Superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar). It is hoped that the use of these machines will permit traffic officers at present engaged in this duty to devote their time to extensive patrols in the suburbs where most accidents occur. The officers using the machines would also see that no meter was out of order, but they would not be concerned with such offences as excessive speed, said Mr Kellar. It was expected at one time that the installation of parking meters would release traffic officers from duty in the central city area, and enable them to patrol the suburbs more extensively, but the checking of meters by officers on foot takes almost as many men as were employed before the meters were installed.
The motor-cycle patrol will work within the four avenues. The council provided £3OO for the purchase of the machines in its estimates for the current year.
