HACK HURDLES AT ASHBURTON

BOSKY OUTSTAYS BRAVE WARRIOR

Bosky opened his winning record as a hurdler at his second attempt in the Hinds Hack Hurdles at Ashburton on Saturday. He lost, several lengths at the jump near the mile, but kept up a steady run on the inner and reached a challenging position going to the last flight. After that he had only Brave Warrior to master. and he did that comfortably by three lengths. Brave Warrior tried to lead all the way. His first two leaps were clumsy, but his jumping improved as he warmed Brave Warrior held on for second by three-quarters of a length from the Oamaru winner. Danger. Point, which had his chance, but did not show race-win-ning dash. Miss Sunshine, which worked into a trailing position half way through the race, was a weakening fourth, foui lengths back and eight lengths clear of Escalado.

Jolly Miller was sixth in a gap, ano there was a bigger gap to Bryn Afton, which was always struggling. Argive bled and finished last. The favourite, Export, fell at the five furlongs when going well in a trailing position. Not Tested Purser, a firm favourite, was little troubled to win the Lyndhurst Two-year-old Handicap. It was his second success for Mr R. G. Gerard, and the sixth win in seven rides for E. G. Low in a week Purser was close to the pacemaking Skyrain coming to the straight, ran clear outside the furlong and won by a length from the top weight Inishowen, which was running on. Inishowen was close behind Purser to the straight, and ran the last furlong gamely. He was two lengths clear of Believe Me, which shaped well at his first start, running close to the leaders all the way. Skyrain faded to fourth after pacemaking two lengths further back. There was another gap to Rags and Patches and Wolsey, which were both well up all the way. Te Kawana was last away. High Idea was slow out, and Cill-Dara drifted tn the first few strides. Lord Fane’s Win Nehru made a determined bid to lead all the way in the Novice Stakes, but he was caught close to home by Lord Fane, which trailed on the inner, and did not have to 'eave the rails to challenge. Le Roi was alongside Nehru to the straight, but felt the strain, and the latter went clear for a time outside the furlong. But Lord Fane, which had been trailing alongside Hunter’s Praise, had the last and strongest run, and it gave him victory by a long neck. Skyrider came from the third line on the turn for third, but four lengths back. He had only a head to spare from the fasterfinishing Sir Arthur, which was in the middle of the field on the home turn.

Lucky Time made a very encouraging debut, finishing strongly for fifth ahead of Bask, which had his chance.

Boissier Boy and the second favourite. Bagpipe, were next. Farren and Super Lin were the last away and Hunter’s Praise and Equipage also gave ground.

Easy for West Indies West Indies made one act of the Moreton Hack Handicap by leading all the way. He spurted away when his rider drew the whip near the furlong, and won by three lengths from Column, which made a late arrival from the ruck to beat Meteorologist. West Indies spent several minutes leaning on the back strap, but went into line and jumped out well, drawing clear inside the first furlong. Miss Meteor dashed through into the trailing position ahead of Meteorologist. Ngahuia, and Dart Away. West Indies veered away from the rails outside the furlong, but responded brilliantly under the whip and had the race in hand well short of the post. Meteorologist just failed to hold second place; Column’s run was too strong. Miss Meteor was close up, fourth. Ngahuia. weakening slightly, was fifth ahead of County Fermanagh, Dart Away, Wayren, Pretend, Just Toby, Private Angelo, Pat’s Treasure, Admiral’s Keep, Marette, and Jeune. Massive Holds On Massive improved a good record for the leading Canterbury trainer, P. H. C. Stock with a neat win in the Seafield Hack Handicap. He trailed closelv early, but took over near the half-mile and kept clear of the faster-finishing Humber Hawk. There was half a length between them at the finish. Duel, the best of the others, and the win favourite, was three lengths back third.

Humber Hawk was third at the six furlongs. but was three places further back at the half-mile, and held that position to the home turn. His run from the furlong was solid, but he did not unduly trouble Massive.

Duel followed Massive from the halfmile to the turn, but could not muster race-winning finishing speed. Duel had only a neck to spare from Scotch Emblem, which had the run of the race.

Airscol improved a few places for fifth, but was in a gap of three lengths. Sir Galahad, the early leader, was sixth ahead of King Robin, St. Anthony, Strada, ’roquoi. Gay King. Bonny Prim, and Haughty Chief
