WIN FOR NORTH CANTERBURY

THREE MEN RETURN PAR

Playing the full 6400 yards in an annual match at the Ashburton Golf Club yesterday, players selected from North Canterbury beat South Canterbury players by 7 games to 1 in the foursomes, and 11 games to 5 in the singles. Conditions for play were perfect, and a high standard of golf was maintained. C. W. Caldwell. R. D. Kearns (North Canterbury). and E. G. Kerr (South Canterbun’) each returned a par 73.

In the foursomes. D. M. Robertson &nd L. A. Watson (South Canterbury) were 2 up at the turn, and birdies at the sixth qnd seventh gave them a first half par of 38. Caldwell and his partner. H. J. Gosset. squared at the fifteenth hole, Watson’s No. 8 being too strong, and par figures at the sixteenth and seventeenth holes enabled them to settle the game on the seventeenth green.

The match in which both teams’ captains played, W. D. Armstrong and R. J. Atkinson (North Canterbury) went out for a par 38. and proved too strong for Kerr and R. S. Wakefield, to win 6 and 5.

F. Williamson and M. W. Stanley (North Canterbury) turned 1 up at the turn in their match with G. P. and W. J. Heenan, each pair playing a mixture of brilliant and erratic golf, and producing the best ball to the turn, being three under par. Settling down to steady golf over tne second half. Williamson and Stanley went on to win 3 and 2 at the sixteenth green.

After being all square at the turn and never more than a hole difference in the whole game, Kearns and J. G. Scott battled hard against their opponents. J. B. Forrest and L. G. Harper (South Canterbury). to win the game on the last green, 1 up.

Sound putting by H. W. Lawrence and W. J. McGavock (North Canterbury) gave vthem a 3 and 2 win over J. L. R. Mackay and N. R. Farrant. with both pairs playing soundly. In spite of losing seven to one in the foursomes. South Canterbury started the afternoon singles with an early lead, but sustained pressure by the Northern players, gained an 11 to 5 win.

Kearns, playing Watson, was square when the game finished on the fourteenth green. In his game with B. G. Stowell (South Canterbury), B. L. Clegg, after being 3 down, won the last four to finish 1 up. After trailing his opponent for most of the play, McGavock sank a 20ft putt on the seventeenth green to become 1 up and* settled the issue with a par 4 on the last green.

Kerr was 4 up after six holes, and did the first nine in par figures. He then went on to beat Gosset 3 and 2. Although he hit many powerful tee shots, R. S. Wakefield (South Canterbury) lost to D. J. Ramsay on the greens, with the final score, 2 down and 1.

The new trophy, presented by Mr H W. H. Smallbone, patron of the Ashburton club, was won by the northern players, who decided that the trophy be kept in the Ashburton clubhouse. Results were as follows. North Canterbury players being named first:—

Clegg and W. Caldwell beat B. G. Stowell and O. J. Macer. 4 and 2.

North Canterbury beat South Canterbury by 7 games to 1. Single* C. W.
