AMALGAMATION AT AKAROA
EXCEPTION TO STATEMENT BY COMMISSION ?. contained in a letter from the Local Government Commission to the effect that the Akaroa borough and county councils had agreed to amalgamate was taken by the Mayor of Akaroa (Mr W A Newton), at a meeting of the Borough
He said that the bodies had agreed to nothing of the sort: The joint meeting with the Commission had onlv passed a motion asking the Commis"sion to prepare a provisional scheme. He also criticised the provisional scheme, saying that it was lacking in a lot of the detail brought out at the conference. All the provisional scheme stated was that the borough should be included in the county, subject to a poll of electors. There was no mention in the provisional scheme of the proposal to make Akaroa a county township, with a committee controlling town affairs and town rates spent in the town' Mr Newton said.
The council decided to write to the Commission pointing out that it was m error in stating that the county and the borough had agreed to amalgamate.
The Akaroa Progress Association wrote asking the council to arrange a public meeting to hear the proposals for and against amalgamation. The Mayor said that this could be arranged when the final scheme was brought down, and when more detail had been secured.
