INCREASE LN NEW AWARD

Increases in wages for employee! engaged in coach and motor-body building are announced in a new award issued by the Court of Arbitration The award is retrospective to April 27. Inspectors in assembly plants and coach builders have received an increase of Ijd an hour. Assemblers and trimmer-assemblers receive Id an hour increase. Helpers over the age of 21 now receive 4s BJd an hour, an increase of 3]d. A worked who is in charge of at least four others will receive 2s 6d a week extra, an increase of 2d. Junior helpers aged from 16 to 21 and female workers aged from 16 to 20 have received an increase of 3s 4d a week. Female sewing-machinist! also receive 3s 4d increase. For journeymen-woodworkers using their own tools, the allowance has been increased to l]d an hour.

WAGE INCREASES FOR FIREMEN

Wage increases of from 25s to 35s a week have been granted to firemen under a new award issued by the Court

of Arbitration. The award applies to firemen in the Northern (except Auckland city), Taranaki, Wellington (except Wellington city), Nelson and Canterbury (except Christchurch city) industrial districts.

First, second and third-class firemen and probationers will receive an increase of 25s a week. Senior firemen receive a 29s 7d increase, making their wage £ll Is 3d a week. Third officers and station officers will receive an increase of 35s a- week.

Firemen required to work, other than fire fighting, outside routine hours will receive 2s an hour extra, instead of 7d. Firemen required to do watch room duty outside routine hours will be paid Is an hour extra. Motor-drivers will be paid 10s a extra, an increase of 2s 6d. Firemen doing the work of motor mechanics, plumbers, painters, carpenters, bricklayers, or electricians, will receive an extra 10s a week. Officers and men who respond to fire calls on days off will be paid 6s an hour for the first hour and 5s an hour after that.
