WESTPORT BEATEN BY ASHBURTON
Ashburton Technical High School beat Westport Technical College in Rugby and basketball played at Ashburton yesterday It was Ashburton’s first Rugby win since the competitions started.
In a game which produced patches of good play, the Ashburton team won by 20 points to 3. For Ashburton, G Behrnes (captain) kicked four penalty goals and converted one try. P. Bourke scored two tries, and for Westport a dropped goal was kicked by J. Nelson.
Breaking through from scrums and rucks by the heavier Westport forwards resulted in many offside infringements in the first half, and it was from these that Ashburton scored most of its j:oints.
In the second half the game tightened up, and for 10 minutes a highlight was a concentrated attack on the Ashburton line bv the Westport team, which, however. fared to result in a score.
For Ashburton. Behrnes played an outstanding game, and it was his ability ’hat allowed Burke at number eight to score both tries in the final 15 minutes E Mason, centre for Westport, also played
Superior centre play by Ashburton gave the A basketball team a 25-8 win, while accurate shooting by the B team forwards 2B-12 win over the Westport team.
