TUNNEL ROAD ROUTES
Sir,—lt may well be one of Canterbury s blessings that the 30 years-old-tunnel scheme has failed to materialise. Changes have come, and the scheme is now impracticable. Only one fresh route remains by which ships’ cargoes can be transported from Lyttelton—the existing highway via Rapaki to Governor’s Bay. The road would need widening. From Dyer’s Pass terminus the tunnel road should run to a point below Kennedy’s Bush track, where an easy gradient along the valley le -ds to the open spaces awaiting further development, and where the city,, shut in on the east by the sea and to the south by a range of hills, would have room for expansion. With co-operation of the Departments of Lands and Survey. Railway, and Marine, Lyttelton Harbour Board, borough council, and roads and town planning bodies, the big undertaking should result in a great asset to the province for all time.—Yours, etc., J. B. NORRIS. June 21, 1956. Sir.—Why not stop arguing about routes? Decide on 4he right one and j cut the road through.—Yours, etc., MRS MISUNDERSTOOD. June 21, 1956.
