ARABS AND ISRAEL

Sir.—ln reply to Mr Wheeler, I draw attention to the fundamental governing fact that the Israeli Government did not drive “poor ignorant Arabs from their property.” Arab infiltrators were illegally attacking the Jews and fine Arab armies were poised on the frontiers to “drive the Jews into the sea”—to frustrate the intention of the United Nations Commission for the partition of Palestine. The Arab leaders advised the Palestine Arabs to emigrate to safetv in Arab countries while they conquered the Jews. Many Arabs foolishly took this over-optimis-tic advice, voluntarily leaving Palestine properties. The concerted Arab offensive failed and those voluntary emigrants who gambled on Arab victory caused the “Arab refugee problem.” Many, declining the leaders’ advice, remained on their properties end enjoy equal Israeli citizenship. Israel's practical offers to help solve the problem have been consistently rejected by Arab States.—Yours, etc.. FACTS. June 20. 1956.
