NORTH PAPANUI BUS SERVICE

Transport Board Asks For Licence Representations have been made to the Minister of Transport (Mr W. S. Goosman) by the Christchurch Transport Board for authority for the board to give a service in the expanding areas of Papanui.

A deputation from the board comprising Messrs C. C. Holland (chairman), J. Mathison, M.P., G. D. Griffiths and J. F. Fardell (general manager) met Mr Goosman on Wednesday. Mr Griffiths said last evening that the Minister had promised that the Commissioner of Transport (Mr H. B. Smith) would visit the area to investigate requirements, and if necessary he would consult the board and Midland Motorways Services, Ltd. In July, 1954. the board applied for

a licence from the Christchurch Metropolitan Licensing Authority to operate a bus service over its Cash-mere-Papanui tram route, with extensions along the Main North road to Winters road. Midland Motorways Services, Ltd., objected to the granting of the application. The Authority approved the extended service in August.

The service ran to Winters road for about a month before the decision of the Authority was set aside by the Transport Appeal Authority (Judge Archer) on an appeal by Midland Motorways.

At a meeting of the board last December, a petition was received from the North Papanui Ratepayers’ Association. asking that an area be deleted from the board’s rating area, as the board did not provide a service beyond the Papanui terminus on the North road. At that meeting, Mr Mathison was reported in “The Press’’ as sayipg that the service would have been con‘inued had it not been for the decision of the Appeal Authority. The board was not letting the matter rest. If necessary, the board would approach “the powers that be’’ for legislation enabling the board to give the service to the area which it wanted to give, and to which the people in the area were entitled, said Mr Mathison.
