TUBERCULOSIS PATIENTS

HOUSING AFTER DISCHARGE ASSOCIATION PROPOSES TO BUY HOME A property is being sought by the Canterbury and Westland Tuberculosis Association to cater for the needs of former tuberculosis patients. A vicepresident. Miss Mary Enright, told members of the association this at the annual meeting. Miss Enright said patients, most of them men, were regularly being discharged from the Cashmere Sanatorium. Often they had no . homes They were not fit enough to earn a living wage, and had to depend on pensions.

“Even if they could pay for accommodation. many people are still afraid of infection from former patients, and these poor things are very much up against it.” said Miss Enright. “We really want a place for them ” Miss Enright said the idea of the executive was to obtain an unpretentious house, not a large one, on a fairly big section. In the grounds would be erected some small but comfortable huts, which the Health Department would make available.

It was proposed that an active couple—possibly one of whom had been a tuberculosis patient—could live in the house, and former patients could sleep in the huts but have access to the living rooms in the house, said Miss Enright. Meals would be provided. A sub-committee of the association had alreadv advertised for a suitable property, Miss Enright said. Election of Officers Dr. W. Gordon Rich was re-elected president of the association. Other officers were elected as follows: Vice-presidents, Miss Enright and Mr F. S. Taylor; executive committee. Canon A. H. Norris. Dr. I. C.
