TOURIST HOTEL STANDARDS
“Luxury,” A Misleading Description VIEWS OF N.Z. TRAVEL ASSOCIATION (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 20. A misleading impression was given Dy the term “luxury hotels.” members of the New Zealand Travel and Holiday Association claimed today. What the tourist industry wanted was a very good standard of hotel, not luxurv hotels, said the chairman (Mr J. Newman). Mr R. W. Marshall. General Manager of the Department of Tourist and Publicity, said New Zealand had not got luxury hotels on a world-wide comparative basis and would never have them. Good, modern hotels were what was wanted in the Dominion. Mr E. A. Robinson said the eeneral run of hotels in New Zealand was substandard by' New Zealand requirements. “The term is unfortunate,” said Mr A W. Reed. The association’s chief executive (Mr N. E. Lobb) said he thought the term arose because about three hotels had private baths and so were called luxurv hotels. Mr Marshall said New Zealand did not have a uniform grade of hotels. He thought the system of grading hotels By stars was sometimes misleading as
service could not be taken into account. A small, fairly low-graded hotel might have better service than one with a higher grading.
