NAVY CATERING

ADVISORY APPOINTMENT

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 21. The Royal New Zealand Navy has appointed its first catering adviser. He is a specialist who will advise on the purchase of food, its cooking and attractive presentation, the design of galleys and cooking equipment, and the training of cooks. The catering adviser is Lieutenant Commander W. S. G. Tanner, who entered the Royal Navy as a rating and has spent more than 30 years specialising in cooking and catering. Throughout his naval career, he has had wide experience of all types of naval catering and was selected as chef to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth when they travelled in H.M.S. Vanguard for the Royal tour of South Africa. He subsequently spent two years in Buckingham Palace serving the Royal Household.

After being commissioned as a catering officer in the Royal Navy, he gained more experience in administration and food preparation and had marked success in hotel and catering exhibitions.

Lieutenant Commander Tanner retires from the Royal Navy this month. Before he leaves for New Zealand, probably in August, he is making a comprehensive survey of catering in the Royal Navy. He will examine latest Admiralty practice and methods of training and see the latest cooking equipment and most up-to-date messing arrangements in various classes of ship as well as in shore establishments.
