OBITUARY
MR B. MARTIN (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 21. One of the stalwarts of the New Zealand Labour Party, Mr Bernard Martin, has died in an Auckland hospital, at the age of 74. He was for two years Speaker of the Legislative Council. Mr Martin, who was born in England and educated at Christ’s Hospital. London, came to New Zealand in 1900. at the age of 18. He is survived by his wife, one son. Mr A. G. Martin, and a daughter. Miss Mary Martin, of the staff of the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organisation, who flew home from London a few days ago.
MR S. B. MORRIS
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 20. Mr Selwyn Bentham Morris, a prominent Auckland orthopaedic surgeon, died in the Auckland Public Hospital yesterday after a short illness. He was 50. Mr Morris had been in practice in Auckland continuously for the last 20 years. He was educated at King’s College. qualifying from the Otago Medical School in 1930. Shortly afterwards he left for London to take up specialised post-graduate study,, and in 1934 was admitted to the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, London. He returned to practise in Auckland in 1936.
For many years he was a senior visiting orthopaedic surgeon to Auckland Hospital Board institutions, and an honorary orthopaedic surgeon to the Crippled Children Society. Mr Morris won a New Zealand University hockey blue, and both played and followed cricket with enthusiasm. He is survived by his wife, four sons, and a daughter.
