DISTINCTION FOR UNIVERSITY
LONDON RECOGNITION OF DEGREE
A distinction unique in the British Commonwealth outside England has been given to the chemical engineering department of Canterbury University College through the recognition of its bachelor of chemical engineering degree with honours by the Institution, of Chemical Engineers. London. This oualification will be accepted for associate membership of the institution. Only the full-time undergraduates honours degrees of the universities of London. Cambridge. Birmingham, and Manchester are similarly recognised and no university outside England has the distinction, although the master’s degree in chemical engineering at others is accepted. The bachelor of engineering degree with honours in chemical engineering was instituted by the University of New Zealand only last year, and the course is provided only at Canterbury College. The subject was first offered in the chemistry department when Mr S. R. Siemnn came from Australia in 1944. In 1951 a separate department was formed in the School of Engineering with Mr Siemon as lecturer in charge. A fair number of students have taken the master’s degree with honours, which was recognised by the institution in London. The standard of work has led to this international recognition of the bachelor’s degree with honours
The chemical engineering department has always been cramped for space as it had to be fitted into a fromework established before the subject became a distinct division of engineering. Now. in the plans for the new School of Engineering on the new university site at Riccarton, the department Has a proud place with a large wing to itself cn the left of the main entrance from Creyke road. A big increase in the demand for chemical engineers is expected in New. Zealand.
