LIBRARY FOR ROSS SEA PARTY

APPEAL MADE TO PUBLIC (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 21. To fill the few idle hours of the 22 men of the wintering party of the New Zealand Antarctic Expedition, the Ross Sea Committee is endeavouring to build up a comprehensive library.

Starting with, a gift of books from the British Trans-Antarctic headquarters in London, the library was recently given a big boost by the citizens of Feilding. Funds raised in that area were used to buy a set of Encyclopaedia Britannica and a number of scientific volumes.

“I would like to appeal to the public to send the committe books which they think will be enjoyed by the men during the long southern winter,” the committee secretary (Mr A. S. Helm) said today. If necessary, the books could be returned.

The encyclopaedia set, for example, would be brought back to Feilding, he said.

Questioned on their preferences, the men had shown a wide range of interests, from phi’osophy to Western novels, said Mr Helm.

The general preference had been towards Antarctic books. Sir Edmund Hillary, the leader of the expedition, was a keen reader of early New Zealand history.
