FAULT FOUND IN BRITANNIAS
BOAC To Delay Use (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON. June 20. The introduction of Britannia turboprop airliners on BOAC services to Australia and South Africa will be delayed because of the discovery that in certain atmospheric conditions, dry ice can form inside the plane’s engine cowlings. Recent tests at Entebbe in Africa brought this to light and the company, which had planned to start flying passengers in Britannias next September, to-night issued this statement: “Modifications to prevent the possibility (of icing) are being incorporated and will be the subject of further tropical trials during July. It is expected that the aircraft can be put into service on the South African route by early October and on the Australian route a month later, but no definite announcement .can be made until the end of July.”
