Japan Seeks Advance Notice From U.S.
<Rec 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON. June 20 Japan has asked for advance notice of each individual atomic test carried out by the United States tn tne Pacific’ an authoritative Japanese source said today. It was not immediately known whether the United States had agreed to this request, which was reported to have been made in Tokyo. But since the current series of nuclear tests started at Bikini Atoll, the United States has announced only one major explosion—the hydrogen bomb drop ped from the air on May 21. A week later, on May 28. Japan s Central Meteorological obs , ervat °’2' ] reported another thermonuclear explosion in the Bikini Atoll area causing vibrations about as strong as those resuiting from the May 21 test. The United States Defence Department and the Atomic Energy Commision declined to confirm or deny that a second explosion had in fact taken P1 Thev would only say that the current series of tests was expected to last until August, and that there was no established rule that every individual explosion had to be publicly announced.
