ATOMIC SHIP
Senate Approves Proposal (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 20 The Senate today passed a bill authorising a 37.0C0.000-dollar prototype atom-powered merchant ship as s substitute for the atomic “peace ships” proposed by President Eisenhower.
The House of Representatives approved a similar measure last year. A House Senate conference committee probably will be required to work out a compromise.
Mr Eisenhower had suggested an atom-powered ship that would tour the world and demonstrate the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Some members of Congress said the vessel would only be a “showboat.” The Senate bill was aoproved by voice vote. It would authorise the building of “a nuclear-powered prototype merchant ship capable of providing shipping services on routes essential for maintaining the flow of the foreign commerce of the United States.”
