Two out of every five people m England and Wales were concentrated in six giant “supercities at the time of the last census in 1951, according to official 'figures just issued. These centres. Greater London, south-east Lancashire, the west Midlands, west Yorkshire, the Merseyside and Tyneside held nearly 17 million people, nearly 38.7 per cent, of the population.- . Greater London’s population oi more than 8 million was almost a fifth of that of England and Wales. More than a million people travelled daily to work in London and six central metropolitan boroughs, and another 250.000 came in from surrounding areas to work in London.
