POWER HOUSE DESTROYED
Niagara Falls Rock Slip
(Rec. 8 p.m.) r x NIAGARA FALLS (New York)
A series of earth-shaking falls of rock wrecked one end of a huge powerhouse half a mile below Niagara Falls today. The first fall stopped almost all the power in Niagara Falls, an industrial city with a population of 100,000. An earth shift is believed to have started the slide. It was reported later that two-thirds of the power station fell into the Niagara Gorge half a mile below the falls. Late reports said one man was still missing. Three earth-jarring slides left most of the Schoellkopf station, the largest hydro-electric power works in the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation system, in complete ruin. The company said the damage would run into millions of dollars. Six turbine generators, with a capacity of 200,000 kilowatts, were destroyed.
