THE ARMY TO THE RESCUE IN RAKAIA GORGE AREA.—TOP: An army half-track vehicle taking a station lorry in tow across the Rakaia river at Black Hill on Thursday. At the end of April a large section of the road at Black Hill was washed away by floods, and during the last few weeks runholders have been receiving supplies by air. A temporary road to the riverbed on the Glenrock side of Black Hill was opened this week, fordings of the river being made with the assistance of Army transport. BOTTOM: A station-owner’s car being hoisted on to a loading ramp before being transported across the river. This car was one of several isolated by the wash-out.
