RAIL TRAFFIC FROM COAST
MOVEMENT OF COAL AND TIMBER For the first time for many months the Railways Department ran special goods trains last Sunday to move coal and timber from the West Coast to Canterbury. An officer of the department described the traffic as unusually heavy. The reason for it was the heavy demand for coal he said. On Sunday 3000 tons was moved between Arthur’s Pass and Springfield by five special trains drawing a total of 225 waggons. Two 1000-ton special trains also ran between Springfield and -Christchurch on the same day. On Tuesday there were more specials over the same routes. Three specials ■ moved 1800 tons between Arthur’s Pass and Springfield and one special train brought 1000 tons to Christchurch. The balance will be moved between Springfield and Christchurch on normal services.
