IMPERIAL PREFERENCE
Sir, —It is amusing to find the Social Credit enthusiasts, especially that section led by Mr Edr nds, which bewails the vanished glories of empire, quoting L. S. Amery. so approvingly. For while Amery was a great advocate of Imperial preference and economic protection generally, he was also the architect of Indian independence, and of Burmese independence, too. In fact, he started that great evolution in Commonwealth affairs which Mr Edmonds and lis friends habitually deplore—and which, amorfe other things, doomed Imperial .preference more surely than the Washington loan agreement or Bretton Woods.—Yours, FREE-TRADER. June 6, 1956.
