TORRENTIAL RAIN AT THAMES

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 3. Floodwaters invaded shops, offices, and homes in Thames yesterday, when the Hape and Karska creeks overflowed as the result of a torrential downpour betwen 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Cars were immobilised, and children sailed flat-bottomed boats on house lawns. Minor damage only was done. The Tapu Hill road to Whitianga from Thames, which was only recently reopened for traffic, is closed again after further damage by the storm. Heavy rain throughout the Rotorua district during the last two days caused widespread flooding and disrupted some road communication. For the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. today, more than 3in of rain had fallen in Rotorua. The Rotorua-Whakatane main highway was closed on Friday. Saturday, and part of today, when slips came down on the Rotoiti hill and at Rotoma.
