WHITE’S BRIDGE

LEGAL OPINION ON 1 USE SOUGHT | A legal opinion on the use of the old wooden bridge (White’s bridge) over the south branch of the Waimakariri river is to be obtained by the North Canterbury Catchment Board. “It is not in the best condition,’’ said the chairman of the board’s drainage and rivers control committee (Mr A. T. Bell), reporting to the board. “In certain respects the committee felt ’ that it was not sure of its rights and responsibilities.” Professor L. W. McCaskill: It might be necessary to close the bridge except for our own use. Mr Bell: I do not know if we can do that. Thai is one of the points involved. The chairman (Mr R. M. D. Johnson) said that the bridge was in “a pretty dickie state.”
