Wellington Unbeaten To Win Freyberg Rose Bowl

GOLF

(New Zealand Press Association)

NEW PLYMOUTH. May 20. Unbeaten throughout the tournament. the consistent Wellington team scored a merited win in the interprovincial Freyberg Rose Bowl golf series, concluded at the New Plymouth C’ub’s course at Ngamotu yesterday. It was Wellington's second win since the inception of the tournament. Hawke's Bay. after its surprise defeat by Canterbury, finished equal second with Taranaki-Central King Country, just half a point behind Wellington. Last year's holder. Manawat’iWanganui. finished well down with two points. Cn Saturday the weather improved and conditions could hardly have been more favourable. The gale subsided and in the afternoon there was no more than a light breeze. Overhead conditions were brilliantly fine and the greens were fast. The sudden change in conditions pr ved almost as puzzling to some competitors as had the wind of the first two days. Points at the end of the tournament were:—Wellington 51, TaranakiCentral King Country 5. Hawke’s Bay 5. Auckland .4. Canterbury 4. Waikato 3. Bay of Plenty 3, ManawatuWanganui 2. Otago 2, Buller-Westland-Marlborough-Nelson J. Northland i. Southland J.

Surprise Defeat The major surprise in a day of surprises was the 6-0 defeat of the overnight leader, and firm favourite for the trophy, Hawke’s Bay. It was overwhelmed by Canterbury to throw the final issue completely into the melting pot. Everything then hinged on the final round. Wellington scored a decisive win, reducing the importance of the other matches. As it happened Hawke’s Bay outplayed Southland and Taranaki beat Canterbury. A big gallery followed the match between B. M. Silk and R. J. Charles and saw an interesting struggle that ended all square. At the third Silk left himself a 20foot putt for a four but sank it and at the fifth landed in a bunker. They were all square at the turn. At the sixteenth Silk pushed his tee shot between trees and had to play a most difficult recovery. He overhit it and the ball finished up on the twelfth fairway. Charles, with a short putt for a win, saw the ball sit on the edge of the cup. At the vital eighteenth, Charles broke through to win and square the match. R. R Newdick. of Auckland, struck good form in the morning round against A. C. Relph, Bay of Plenty, and beat him 8 and 7. Newdick, who played delightful golf, and clearly showed his promise, was two under scratch when the match finished. He appreciated the calmer conditions. Had two putts that sat on the edge of the hole dropped, hej could nave finished four under scratch. His display was one of the best of the tournament. Results:— FIFTH ROUND Otago v. Waikato A. R.
